World Book Day 2020

This year we had the pleasure of hosting Matt Windle, ‘The Poet with Punch’, Birmingham’s current Poet Laureate who was able to come in to work with our year 7 and year 10 students.

By day, Matt works both nationally and internationally in schools, prisons, Pupil Referral Units, care homes, businesses and various other establishments with the intention of inspiring people of all ages through poetry and creative writing.

We were luck enough to have Matt with us on his busiest day of the year WORLD BOOK DAY!

In the morning, Matt presented to all year 7 students and our neighbouring primary school Bromley Hills’ year 5 students. Talking about his love for poetry, and how no matter what your passion in life is, you should pursue it. Our year 10 students worked with Matt for the rest of the day working on upcoming GCSE Poetry Anthology, creating their own pieces inspired by the poem ‘Valentine’ by Carol Ann Duffy.

We also held a number of competitions throughout the day! AIR won the House writing competition, you can see the start of the story here, air won with the most creative end!

Steve, Year 10, won our individual creative writing competition and Isabelle, Year 7 won the fan art competition and Mason, Year 8 won our poetry compeition! All winning house points and stationary packs!

On top of this staff and Year 7 students went above and beyond with their costumes to help us raise the profile of World Book Day, you can see from the images below!

Thanks to everyone that contributed, our job is to ensure the enthusiasm for books remains all year round, make sue you visit Mrs Lopez in The Hub to pick up your next book!
